“Atticus told me to delete the adjectives and I'd have the facts.”
~
To Kill a Mockingbird
We talk about stereotypes, Civil Rights movies, the White Savior trope, the importance of the rule of law, problems with the American justice system, and
Go Set a Watchman.
You didn't mention that in Go Set a Watchman, Tom Robinson is acquited by the jury, so the system DID work--unlike Mockingbird. Atticus, although flawed and racist himself, does his duty and gets justice for his client. The original book was more the product of Harper Lee's NY editor's mindset.
ReplyDeleteSome background, from what I have read about Watchman, it is essentially the original book that was presented to the publisher. Although I have not read it, it seems to be a much more complex and thought-provoking story.
