Episode 34: The Pilgrim's Podcast: The Musical

In what may be our strangest episode yet, we sing Gilbert and Sullivan, talk about the history of American musicals including Singin' in the Rain, Fiddler on the Roof, The Phantom of the Opera, and Hamilton, speculate about which modern movies would make good musicals, and talk about the sociology of music.

  2. You have a lovely singing voice, Hannah, when it all comes together. Nice.

    1. Thanks - I was laughing so hard during Modern Major-General that I had a hard time keeping it together. Poor Dad - for some weird reason the microphone keeps distorting the first 30 seconds and I forgot to warn him, so he sounds like an evil robot singing Gilbert and Sullivan.

  3. Phantom of the Opera is similar to Oklahoma in some respects. The scene where they are singing "That's All I Ask of You" while Phantom slinks around makes me think of moments where Jud is prowling and Curly/Laurie are happy (like the wedding where he comes out of the shadows with a firebrand to try to murder them). Of course, this trope of the fair, innocent couple and the evil, tortured, dark character who lusts after the woman also goes back to Paradise Lost. Compare with that passage where Adam and Eve are prattling on happily to each other while Satan mopes around watching them from a distance and monologuing to himself.

    1. Haven't seen Oklahoma in ages, so I couldn't speak to that, but that's an interesting take. Of course, Raoul has his flaws, too - he's prepared to use Christine to catch the Phantom, and while it could probably be justified, it creates tension between them - they're not quite a perfect couple. And Christine has her issues too.
