The Leonard Nimoy show in the 1970s was called "In Search Of. . .". I think the national interest in UFOs was fanned by the book "In Search of Ancient Astronauts" and the stories in The National Enquirer and all the other tabloid offshoots. You have to remember that these were pre-Internet days.
'Mulder and Scully Meet The Were-Monster' was originally written by Darin Morgan for ABC's 2005 revival of The Night Stalker--which showed the continuing adventures of investigative journalist Carl Kolchak. You can see the script from 2005 here, if you have any doubt. There were very few changes, other than inserting Mulder and Scully into the story and Mulder's "crisis of faith" that he was experiencing in Season 10.
